WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.......A NEIGHBOR IN NEED'S STORY

St Vincent de Paul received a call from Lorna, a single mother of three who had been living in a motel with her children for way too long.  Lorna had hopes of moving into an apartment but she barely made enough money to pay her monthly expenses let alone come up with a security deposit and the first month’s rent.  The four of them moved into the tiny motel room earlier in the year after being evicted from their previous apartment.  The eviction occurred when Lorna couldn’t work after her heart attack and the valve replacement surgery that followed.  She thought her situation was hopeless until her daughter’s school counselor recommended that she reach out to St Vincent de Paul.  A home visit was scheduled and when the home visit team arrived Lorna was there waiting with her three children. She looked exhausted. After saying a quick prayer, the home visit team listened to her situation and reviewed her monthly budget.  With the help of the St Stephen Conference of St Vincent de Paul, Lorna and her children were able to move into an apartment and out of the small motel room. During the visit the team asked what else they could do to help. A voucher for the SVDP Thrift Store was provided along with arranging for the delivery of a new bed and some bedding for her ten year old son, who did not have a bed. When asked if they needed any other furnishings, she replied that we had done too much already and that we should save it for someone else who might need help. We received a big thank you in addition to the blessing of knowing this family had a home that night and beyond.

With your generous financial support, families like this one are given an opportunity to overcome financial obstacles that they could not do on their own.
