Description: The Southern Resident killer whales are a unique population of orcas found in the Pacific Northwest. They are made up of three pods—J, K, and L—and live in close-knit, matriarchal family groups led by older females. Most orcas spend their entire lives with their mothers and grandmothers, creating strong family bonds that help preserve their culture and survival.
