The Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon is a scenic, USATF-certified 26.2-mile race run entirely on the paved Lake Wobegon Trail, a former rail line converted into a smooth, flat path through the heart of Stearns County, Minnesota. The course starts at Holdingford High School in Holdingford, MN, and finishes at the Trail Facility in St. Joseph, MN, passing through the small towns of Albany and Avon along the way.
With minimal elevation change and a gentle net downhill, the course is a Boston Marathon qualifier and a favorite among runners chasing a personal best. The route winds past farmland, lakes, and a designated nature area, offering a peaceful, traffic-free run away from city crowds.
Organized and hosted by the St. Cloud River Runners, a local running club active since 1983, the event is known for its strong community support, well-stocked aid stations, and small-town charm — with local volunteers and residents cheering runners on from start to finish.
