The Feed

Where to find it

The Feed is the center column of your home Dashboard (the first item in the sidebar). Four tabs control the mix: All (the default), Following, My Clubs, and My Communities.

What shows up

Three streams flow into the All tab:

• People you follow. Their posts, plus their activity. Registering for a race, saving one, marking “I'll be there,” joining a club or community, earning a trophy, and Run This Runner game milestones. Your own activity shows too.
• Clubs and communities you belong to. Posts from groups you're an active member of. Group posts are member-only: even for a public club, you see its posts in your feed by being a member, not by following the person who wrote them.
• Events you're part of. Registering for or saving an event subscribes you to its content, community wall posts, comments on the event, and director announcements.

Reading The Feed

The Feed shows the newest things first. Nothing is ranked or shuffled. It looks and works the same on the website and in the Run This app.

• Posts get a full card: the person, the time, their words and photos, then a heart, a comment count and a share button. A post made on a club, community or race wall shows where it was posted, just under the name. Tap that to open the wall.
• Activity (a registration, a save, a club join, a trophy) is a short row, so real posts are easy to find. Tap the race, club or person it names to open it.
• Race updates. When a race director posts an announcement for a race you're registered for or saved, it shows as a card with the race's logo, the announcement's title and its first lines. Tap the card to open the race page with that announcement open. Tap the race's name to open just the race page.
• Links in posts. On the website, a link opens in a new tab. In the Run This app, a link to a Run This page (a race, a club, a profile or a post) opens that page right in the app, and a discount code in a race link is kept for when you register. Links to other sites open in the app's browser. If a Run This link opens in the browser instead, update the app.
• Grouped activity. When several people do the same thing, like registering for the same race, it shows as one line: “Riley and 5 others registered for Summit Ridge 10 Miler”. Tap 5 others (or the arrow) to see each person.
• More as you scroll. Older posts load when you reach the bottom.
• New posts. While you read, The Feed checks for newer posts every few minutes and when you come back to it. If there are some, a New posts button appears at the top. Tap it to jump up and see them.

Posting to the feed

Tap What's new? at the top of the feed to open the composer. It is the same on the website and in the Run This app, and on club, community and race walls.

• Where it goes: a post goes where you started it. From The Feed it goes to your followers (the composer says Posting to your followers). From a club, community or race wall it goes on that wall (the composer says Posting in and the wall's name). To post on a wall, open that club, community or race first. A wall post also shows in The Feed.
• Photos: add up to 10. Each shows as a thumbnail with an X to take it back out before you post. Run This shrinks big photos before they upload. On a post, tap a photo to see it full screen, and use the arrows (or the arrow keys) for the rest. JPG and PNG photos work everywhere.
• Polls: tap the poll button next to the photo button to add a poll. What you write in the post is the question. Add 2 to 4 choices (up to 40 characters each) and pick when it closes: 1 day, 3 days or 1 week. See Polls below.
• Add a race: tap Add a race in the composer's toolbar to put a race card on your post (it then says Race added). It lists your races first (ones you are registered for, saved or direct), and you can search Run This races by name. Pasting a runthis.run race link does the same. A post with a race card needs a few words too (the box says Say something about this race). A race's own wall has no Add a race. See Link previews and race cards.
• Link previews: paste a link to a web page and a preview of it shows under your words, with an X to remove it.
• One at a time: a post can have photos, a poll or a race card, not more than one. A link preview shows only on a post with none of those.
• @mentions: type @ and a name to tag someone you follow or a club you are in. They get a notification.
• Question: tap Question in the toolbar at the bottom of the post box to add a Question label. It's off until you tap it.
• Drafts: what you write is saved on your device as you type (Draft saved). Close the composer with something written and it asks Save draft, Discard or Keep editing. Next time you start a post in the same place, your words come back with a Picked up your draft note. Photos in a draft stay only while Run This is open.
• Words Run This doesn't allow: if your post includes one, a red note says so and Post stays off until you change it.
• Keep it kind?: if something might read as harsh, Run This asks before posting. Pick Edit my post to change it, or Post anyway.
• Editing: for 15 minutes after you post, Edit in the post's ••• menu shows how many minutes are left. You can change the words and mentions (not the photos), and the post then says Edited. Run This keeps the earlier wording for 90 days so reports can be checked, then deletes it. It is also deleted if you delete your account.

A post to your followers goes out to the feeds of everyone who follows you. Every post also has its own link. On the website anyone with that link can open the post, so treat feed posts as public. In the Run This app, a post from a private account opens only for its followers, and a post from someone you've blocked (or who blocked you) doesn't open.

Prefer to keep quiet? The Share my activity switch in Edit profile stops broadcasting your incidental activity (saves, registrations, RSVPs, and club joins) to your followers' feeds. Posts you write always show regardless; they're deliberate, not incidental.

Polls

A poll shows its choices as buttons. Tap one to vote. You then see how the vote is going: a bar and a percentage for each choice, a check on yours, and a line like 12 votes · 2 days left.

• Change your mind: while the poll is open, tap a different choice to move your vote, or tap Undo vote to take it back. You get one vote per poll.
• Votes are private: everyone sees how many votes each choice has, never who voted or what anyone picked. Not even the person who asked, or the admins, can see who voted.
• When it closes: voting stops and the poll shows Final results, with the winning choice in bold. The person who asked and everyone who voted get a notification with the result.
• Ending it early: the person who asked can pick End poll now in the post's ••• menu. So can the admins of a club or community wall, and the race director on a race wall.
• Editing: within the 15 minutes you can reword the question. The choices stay as they are once it is posted.
• On a club or community wall, only members can vote. On a race wall and in The Feed, anyone signed in can. If the Run This app shows only the question, update the app to vote.

Link previews and race cards

When your post has a link to a web page, Run This shows a card for the first link: the page's picture, the page title, and the address of the site it is on (with the site's own name beside it when that is different). Tap the card to open the page. Only the first link gets a card, and only when the post has no photos, poll or race card. The link in your words still works either way.

• How the preview is made: Run This reads the page for you, the way a messaging app does when you share a link. Only the page's address is used, nothing about you. The picture is copied to Run This, so people reading your post don't load anything from that site until they tap the card.
• No preview? Some pages don't have a title Run This can read, or take too long to answer. Your post still goes, with the link in your words.
• Race cards: a race card shows the race's picture, name, date and place. Tap it to open the race. When registration was open on Run This as you posted, the card has a Register button until registration closes or the race starts. Otherwise it says View race. The race page always shows whether you can still sign up.
• Which races: any public race on Run This. A private race can be shared only by its race director. Drafts can't be shared.
• Not on race walls: a post on a race's wall can't have a race card. A race link pasted there stays a plain link in your words, with no card. Race cards go on The Feed and on club and community walls.
• Editing: you can change your words for 15 minutes. A race card stays as it was posted. A link preview stays as long as its link is still the first one in your words; take the link out (or change it) and the preview goes. Editing never adds a new preview.
• From a race page: tap Share, then Post in a club or community. Pick one of your clubs or communities and the composer opens on its wall with the race card already on. Write a few words and post. When it is up, a note says where it went, with View.
• If the Run This app shows only the words of these posts, or has no Add a race button, update the app.

Likes and comments

Every feed card, posts and activity alike, can be liked and commented on. Tap the heart to like, or double-tap a post or its photo. Tap a post (or its comment count) to open it with its comments, oldest first, like a conversation. Tap Reply under a comment to answer it; replies go one level deep, with View more replies when there are several. Comments support @mentions and can be liked too. A like on a club, community or race post in The Feed is the same like you see on that wall. Authors are notified when you comment, reply, like, or mention them (each has its own toggle in notification settings).

Tap the number next to a heart to see who liked it, on a post or a comment, anywhere they appear: the feed, a club or community, and an event's Community Wall. Each person in the list has a Follow button, so you can follow someone straight from there. Private accounts show up in these lists, the same way they do on other social apps, their posts just stay private. On a post from a members-only club or community, only members see who liked it.

Event Community Walls

Most events have a Community Wall: open an event and tap the Community Wall card (or See all) to read it. Anyone signed in can post, like and comment. Posts show newest first, with any post the race director pinned at the top, and they look and work the same on the website and in the Run This app.

• Like: tap the heart, or double-tap the post. Tap the number next to a heart to see who liked it.
• Comments: tap a post to open it with its comments, oldest first. Tap Reply under a comment to answer it.
• Questions: tap Question in the post box's toolbar to ask the race something (it's off until you tap it). Posts can have up to 10 photos. Once the race director (or a co-director) comments, your question shows an Answered label. Their posts and comments carry a Race director tag.
• More options: the ••• button (or press and hold on a phone) lets you copy a link, hide a post, report it, or block its author, and delete your own posts and comments.

Hiding, reporting, and removing

The ⋯ menu on a card (or press and hold a post on a phone) adapts to whose it is:

• Someone else's post: Copy link, Hide this post (only you stop seeing it, on every device you sign in on, and on the wall it was posted to), Report (sends it to Run This moderation), and Block (hides that person's posts and comments from you, and yours from them, everywhere).
• Someone else's activity: Hide this and Block, the same as above.
• Your own post: Edit (for 15 minutes after you post, see above), Turn off comments (the comments already there stay and nobody can add new ones; pick Turn comments back on to open them again) and Delete post, which removes it and its photos for everyone. That includes a post you made on a club, community or race wall.
• If an admin acts on your post: when a club or community admin or a race director removes your post, declines it while it waits for approval, or approves it, you get a notification saying so.
• Your own activity card (a save, registration, RSVP, or trophy), Remove from feeds takes the card off everyone's feed without undoing the thing itself: you stay registered, keep the save, keep the trophy.
